Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
