Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
